Excess wind may sound amusing but for my clients who experience it, it can be painful, debilitating and may affect their ability to function in normal life. It can be highly embarrassing releasing wind in public and the other option is holding it in and experiencing gut pain, bloating and discomfort for hours while trying to work, exercise or spend time with family.
CAUSES OF EXCESSIVE FLATULENCE
Excess wind can be caused by a few different factors in the gut such as:
- A lack of stomach acid or digestive enzymes can lead to food remaining in tact as it makes it’s way down the digestive tract and when it gets to the gut bacteria housed in huge amounts in our large intestine, they ferment it like crazy and produce lots of gas.
- A bad mix of gut bacteria (also known as dysbiosis) can also lead to over fermentation. Some bacteria produce more gas than others.
- Food intolerances such as lactose or fructose intolerance means that a person does not have the digestive enzymes required to break down these sugars so again, they get to the gut bacteria in the large intestine in tact and are over fermented.
- A diet full of junk food, refined carbohydrates, sugar, alcohol and bad fats. An unhealthy diet, leads to an unhealthy mix of gut bacteria which leads to excess flatulence.
HOW TO STOP EXCESSIVE FLATULENCE
As you can see, the gut bacteria plays a major role in the production of excess flatulence and is the primary focus of treatment for it. I use dietary manipulation, food intolerance testing and some very targeted supplements to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut and to discourage the growth of pathogenic, excess gas producing bacteria. After a few weeks or months of treatment you should be able to function in public again without the worry of any loud, unexpected noises or pain and discomfort.
