Did you know that when you burn fat, the remains of your fat molecules are discarded as part of respiration as carbon dioxide via the lungs? So, when you burn fat you breath it out, not sweat it out!
With ECAL, an individual’s metabolic rate (or energy production) is accurately assessed using Indirect Calorimetry, the gold standard for assessing human metabolism. Information gathered from ECAL includes daily energy requirement at rest in calories, how this energy is being produced (whether from fat or carbohydrate), and the efficiency with which cells use oxygen for energy production. Such technology was previously only available to elite athletes and academic researchers, but as with all technology it has now shrunk and fits nicely in a clinical setting.
At the heart of ECAL is exclusive software that provides individualised reports showing how much fat you are burning compared to glucose after a 4-hour plus fast. Ideally, we want to be burning 80% fat compared to only 20% of glucose after a period of fasting. However, when a person is metabolically unhealthy they may be solely relying on glucose and not accessing their fat stores. This can lead to metabolic dysfunction, weight gain, reduced sports performance and chronic disease.
The test is carried out in the Physical Nutrition Clinic and takes around 10-minutes to complete. You sit in a relaxed position and breath into a mouthpiece which is attached to an ECAL machine for around 5-6 minutes. When the test is complete you will be provided with a full report detailing your current metabolic health. Your nutritionist will use the results to formulate an individualised nutrition plan for you depending on the results. You can repeat the ECAL test at any to assess progress and improvements in metabolic efficiency.
