At Physical Nutrition we can help you work out if you have coeliac disease and/or help you recover from the inflammation and damage associated with this autoimmune condition after a diagnosis.
Coeliac disease is a genetic disease linked to the genes HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8 and results in an abnormal immune response to gluten, a protein normally found in wheat, rye, barley and oats (oats are actually gluten free grains but they are often processed in plants where gluten grains are processed and are cross contaminated). Our gut wall is lined with tiny, finger-like projections called villi that are responsible for the excretion of digestive enzymes and the absorption of important nutrients. Coeliac disease causes these vitally important villi to become flattened and damaged which can lead to a lack of digestive enzymes in the gut to break down our food and a malabsorption of nutrients leading to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. The symptoms of coeliac disease are:
SYMPTOMS OF CELIAC DISEASE
- Gut symptoms – constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, cramping, bloating, abnormal pain, steatorrhea or a mixture of all of the above!
- Fatigue – very common
- Persistent iron deficiency anaemia and/or other vitamin and mineral deficiencies
- Failure to thrive or delayed puberty in children
- Weight loss or gain
- Bone and joint pain
- Recurrent mouth ulcers and/or swelling of mouth or tongue
- Brain fog and irritability
- Skin rashes
- Easy bruising of skin
The cure for coeliac’s is to maintain a gluten and dairy free diet. This can often be easier said than done! Gluten is in a wide array of foods and is commonly added to condiments, sauces and even oven chips. A newly diagnosed coeliac (or even someone who considers themselves gluten sensitive) can struggle to find foods that are gluten free but healthy at the same time (please don’t confuse the label ‘gluten free’ with ‘healthy’ on our supermarket shelves – that is often far from the case!). At Physical Nutrition we can help our coeliac clients to make healthy food choices, and provide gluten free meals plans and recipes as well as providing a gut healing program to address any gut damage and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. We will have you well on the road to recovery in no time.
